The 2012 Mazda CX-9 ranks 2 out of 23 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 58 published reviews and test drives of the Mazda CX-9, and our analysis of reliability and safety data. If you’ve decided to trade in your sporty car for more cargo and passenger space, but don’t want to lose too much fun-to-drive performance, test drivers say you’ll be especially happy with the 2012 Mazda CX-9.
The CX-9 is a bit short on the technology front, as we struggled trying to figure out how best to use the Bluetooth Hands Free We synchronized our smart phones and added our contacts, but the system would only accept phone numbers. We experienced the same problem with other Mazda models. The navigation system also fails to give a good first impression, to be slow and providing an interface that was difficult, well, navigate. Mazda says it is working on a new package of connectivity and navigation, and can not come soon enough.
While our overall experience of the interior of the CX-9 is treneded slightly towards the positive, we were more interested in how well this large unit of Mazda. We can confidently say that Mazda has chosen a competent engine, which is a good start. The V6 engine produces 273 hp 3.7 liters at 6.250 rpm and a healthy 270 pounds-feet of torque at 4.250 rpm The industrial six-cylinder comes with a six-speed automatic with manual shift mode.
The transmission offers the CX-9 a lot of power from the line, with an official 0-60 time of 7.4 seconds. That sounds right to our bottom as we were impressed with how eager this three-row crossover is to leave the starting blocks. The CX-9 also boasts impressive power of passage, like the automatic transmission does not hesitate to drop a gear or two when needed. Our tester also came with Mazda’s active torque split All-Wheel-Drive System, which applies power to all four wheels. We were able to test the AWD system on some roads wet and sloppy, but they were sloppy enough to launch the division of the couple for a loop.
A kinematic chain will be appreciated, but to live up to Mazda’s old slogans requires more than just horse power – it requires a management style – no simple trick into something so large. For the CX-9, Mazda engineers have mounted on the front and a multilink suspension Independent MacPherson on the back. When coupled with the AWD system, the suspension feels very composed, even in hard cornering at higher speeds, with a small roll, which is not normally associated with high-riding 4.500 pound vehicles. Steering comes courtesy of a rack and pinion with variable assist power configuration. Crossover features many of the top steering ratios, but this is not the case with the CX-9. The Mazda has a great ratio of 16.3:1, which contributes to drive the CX-9 feel smaller and more athletic. Braking is a snap thanks to 12.6-inch rotors at all four corners, even if the pedal is sensitive and may take a little ‘practice to avoid what they feel like panic stops at the first stop sign.
Mazda CX-9 handles better than any vehicle in its class, but when it comes to fuel economy, Mazda is not that different from other three-row crossover. He wants the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the CX-9 AWD-equipped to deliver 22 miles per gallon on the highway and 16 mpg in city driving. This is where the weight and engaging driving dynamics has come back to bite us, because we have an average of just over 18 miles per gallon during our week with the CX-9. This is a mile per gallon less than the EPA says we should have the media, and we probably would have never gotten back If the CX-9 is not so much fun to drive for three-row CUV.
Reviewers say that the Mazda CX-9 is one of the sportiest crossovers on the market, but that’s not all it’s good at. It also has a good number of standard features, and its first and second rows are roomy. Auto critics note that its sleek, standout styling will turn more heads than most traditional-looking SUVs, and that adults will fit in its third row, which can be rare in this class.
